Kathi, I wish I could find the email Tom sent me explaining the alcohol
in Gentian Violet, but...

However, the answer is, the chemical is not soluble in water.  It must
be dissolved in alcohol and then diluted with water.  You won't ever
find any Gentian Violet without alcohol, trust me, I tried!
