Pat is right-there is certainly more than "back to sleep" involved in
decreasing SIDS risk. Sound bites never tell the whole story (think "Breast
is best'). The original reason I posted any of this was simply to point out
that side-sleeping is a risk factor for SIDS (as is formula feeding). If
anyone is interested in a summary of the current AAP position on SIDS as it
relates to a variety of risk factors (including breastfeeding, tobacco,
etc.), the March 2000 issue of Pediatrics has an article titled "Changing
Concepts of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome." An extensive bibliography is
included.
