The Nebraska women's prison has a program to encourage moms to keep their
babies with them in prison and breastfeed. I sent them a bunch of copies of
Pam Wiggins wonderful little book "Why Should I Breastfeed My Baby" a few
years ago, after reading about it in the newspaper (Sunday magazine
supplement to the local newspaper). I got a very nice letter back from the
director of the program. Have no idea if I could dig this up in my office,
or when I would get a chance. You might be able to find something on the
internet, searching on Nebraska and prison and breastfeeding. As I recall,
the babies had to spend the night in the nursery, and the moms in their
cells, but during the day, moms and babies could be together, and they were
encouraged to nurse. Seems to me also that once the babies turned one, they
had to go outside to other caretakers, but I may be remembering that
incorrectly . . . it's been probably 5-6 years.
