He smells so sweet, I'm a little sad for what their father
and I missed out on with our first three. I also learned enough to be
able to 'defy' hospital policy and sleep with my baby, with the bed
sides up, and carry him in a sling and not push that plastic aquarium
around. Every time I ventured down the hall, I was stopped by oodles of
mums asking me about the sling, several were really impressed when they
noticed my baby was actually happily latched on as well :)

Yeah, it's hard to think that we should just live and learn, move on,
etc. But what I tell myself is, think of how much differently I'm
mothering all of them now, and what they would have missed at this age
if I hadn't had that new baby!
Every time I look at my teenagers, I am soooo happy I have learned what
I have from each baby I've had since them. I can trust them largely
because I have learned so much more about trusting my instincts since
those first days of motherhood (we even had cribs back then!). If they
had been teenagers then, I wouldn't have been able to say, "We're going
away for a few days. How about having some friends in for a pizza or
something while we're gone?" I keep getting these wide-eyed,
wide-mouthed "You'll *let* us?"
I think this goes beyond my feeling reassured that having cared for five
little siblings will prevent some of those things we're worried about.
