Dear Dawn,
How long has this mom had this lump and what has the surgeon done prior to
delivery to assess it? ( ultra sound, mammogram, needle bx? )
Does she have a history of fibrocystic breasts?
There is no reason she cannot breastfeed on this side prior to a bx. At this
point in the immediate postpartum this side will be making milk, so not
nursing on this side will not prevent the onset of lactogenesis. If the
surgeon's reasoning to not breastfeed on this side is to prevent leaking of
milk post bx, he's out of luck.
I wrote this to another Lactneter, why not needle bx? This is done with a
several bx with a needle to the lump and the immediate area around it. But
before anyone comes near her with a knife there needs to be some diagnostic
tests first.
I posted Susan Love's web site last week. It is www.susanlovemd.com.
I would ask your question there also. This mom may need to find another
surgeon but first approach the surgeon with information and maybe they will
be enlightened.
Good luck.
