As an NP working in a fairly large family practice with 8 other docs. Three
of the docs do OB and they all do pedes. I see this too often to count. At
least now most of the docs are encouraging them. This gives moms some
amunition because they can say, "My doctor wants me to breastfeed for..."
and it will be respected.
There are very few places that any mom in the US gets support to nurse a
toddler. For those HCP who do see moms--if you are not doing so then,
please encourage them at every opportunity and let them know it is OK to
nurse as long as they are both enjoying it. It helps make their world just
a little more right.
Chris Betzold NP CLE
( who is getting alot of pressure right now to quit with her almost 3 year
old and who's mom said over 21/2 years ago when presented with the AAP's
guidelines that, OK you can nurse you baby til one year! Aaah, if only AAP
had mentioned the age of five.)
In reality she is getting the anti-breastfeeding messaege from family =
members. We talked awhile the more I thought about it the more PO'd I got =
that she does what is best for her baby and gets negative feed back.
I was sure to give her the local LLL number.
