Re : Gatifloxacin
Gatifloxcin was just introduced into the US market. Its just another
fluoroquinoline antibiotic similar to ofloxacin, levofloxacin, etc. No data are
available on its entry into human milk. In these cases always try to suggest an
alternative that we have good data on, and thats ofloxacin in which milk levels
are reported to be low and many times less than ciprofloxacin. Because
levofloxacin(Levaquin) is an isomer of ofloxacin, its breast milk kinetics should
be identical to ofloxacin. The only real side effects to be observant for are
changes in GI flora, but these are unlikely at the low doses ingested via milk.
And yes, it is in my new '2000 edition.
