Dear Chris,
I once attended a conference with the topic 'Breastfeeding as a
Public Health Issue'
and it was great! I once heard a doc say breastmilk is 'preventive
medicine'. If you review all the health benefits breastfeeding will sell
itself!! In my prenatal class I 'break the ice' at the beginning by
handing out laminated cards with a health benefit on each one, and the
participants read 2 or 3 that most interest them........I begin by saying
something like 'During the past 10 and 20 years much research has been
done about just how healthy mother's milk is'.............because I want
to create a non-threatening atmosphere and so no one will feel stupid
about what they didn't know, or because they weren't breastfed
themselves, or no one in their family does it.
If one understands how very vital and healthy human milk is (as
well as the act of nursing), the support will come naturally.
The 3 main things I like doctors and the general public to know are:
1. It is super healthy
2. There are ways to evaluate if baby is 'getting enough'
3. There is help available for problems
How did that go........There is a substance that can prevent/minimize
all these infections, promote love and bonding between mom and
baby,....etc.... That may be a great opener.
Good luck and have fun!
