Hi Chris,
Well, let me share the 'fee' thing with you as well.
At first I thought that it wouldn't be of much interest what a Dutch IBCLC
charged for a fee.
I work in a small private practice in Rijswijk, The Netherlands.
The NVL (Dutch Lactation COnsultants Association) worked out standard
hourly fees for
us, based on the salary of a midwive -although they just got a 56 % raise,
we didn't-.
A home visit/consult officially costs around U.S. $44 (Dutch guilders
100,00) an hour. This includes 2 x 15 min. follow-up by phone. A phone
consultation would cost US $ 0.44 a minute.
But, rates differ amongst us. I often see the first consult as 1 hour, even
if I've been there for 2.
We are not reimbursed at the moment, but we're working on this very hard.
Some health-insurances pay for special consultations (like cleft lip/palate
baby's)but that's still in its infancy.
About our degree of competition.....THe Netherlands is only 300 km.from
north to south -a small country-. We have about 150 IBCLC's now of which
only 68 are available for private consultations. In my area there are about
4 other lc's in private practice and I work together with most of them.
The IBCLC's come from a range of educations. There are (maternity-)nurses,
midwives, well baby clinic docters and LLL and other lay persons amongst them.
HOpe this helps a bit,
Warmly,
Renate Rietveld, IBCLC
