Sharon:  Search the Archives using (cot death) and you'll find good
references, summaries & citations to the New Zealand Cot Death Study.  I
belive it's the source of the current  "Back To Sleep" campaign promoting
putting babies to sleep on their backs or their sides, NOT on their tummies.
Time was, and many still have trouble letting go of the notion, that babies
should be protected from aspirating spitup by putting them down to sleep on
their tummies.

If I remember correctly:  No. 1 association with SIDS was tummy-sleeping.
No. 2 was living in a smokers' household.  No. 3 was NOT being breastfed.
It wasn't proof, but very strong associations, that continued to hold up no
matter how the data was contrasted & compared.  The citation will help you
locate the abstract &/or the entire study.

Maybe someone on L'net can say: hasn't there been a followup study showing a
decline in SIDS after the "Back To Sleep" campaign started several years
ago?  Now why hasn't the same attention been given to the NOT being
breastfed part?
