In the war for birth and breastfeeding, I still believe our greatest enemy is
the "life should be pain-free mentality." Somehow we have lost the concept
in society that not everything is a painless event. Breastfeeding problems
so often follow inductions (now there is a topic!!!), long labors, epidurals,
c-sections, with tired moms and babies, etc. When I was young and innocent, I
bought wholeheartedly that women could give birth and there was value in
working through childbirth to bring your child into the world. I still
believe that as well as the fact that working to give birth is excellent
preparation for parenting which is definitely not pain-free. The same goes
for breastfeeding. Some women quit because they don't like the feel of it
after 1 feeding, or the first night when they want to send the baby to the
nursery. How do we change the hearts and minds of parents to begin the
sacrifices for their children while pregnant?
