Hi Cindi,
Sorry this is so late, I am finally catching up on 1200 lactnet posts
today!
Progesterone is the hormone that is implicated in affecting seizure
threshold. Often the drop in progesterone that accompanies birth will
increase a woman's seizure frequency. Another possible factor is body
water and the dilution of anticonvulsant medications. Some women with
catamenial epilepsy (seizures triggered by the menstrual cycle) find
that they have seizures when they bloat secondary to a reduction in
their anticonvulsant blood levels. Others are helped by taking small
doses of progesterone right around the time they expect their menses.
Both of these factors would potentially relate to a postpartum woman,
but neither is directly related to breastfeeding.
