Saw a young 18 year old hispanic girl over the weekend for a
maternal-child home visit. She was nursing, the hospital knew that and
sent her home with a packet of oral contraceptives. (NOT the mini pill)
Just because she is young, single AND hispanic. The common thinking
here is that these girls probably won't really breastfeed anyway so why
not prevent a pregnancy. I have a call into the nurse manager of the
floor where this girl was a patient to ask (politly) about this common
practice in the Hartford area. Needless to say, I told her NOT to take
them and to talk to her doctor about other methods of birth control (A
very important topic in this population). We had a long breastfeeding
focused visit, hope it sinks in, or at least makes her think and nurse at
least some of the feeds for a while. He is a great nurser and she has
great "equipment". I tossed the hospital supplied used formula bottles
while I was there too. They sent her home with a bunch of bottles of
formula as he was hypoglycemic after delivery and "might need them".
Talk about sabotage! sigh.
