When I teach about formula, I give the facts, but I point out that, "like
medicine" it may be needed in unusual circumstances. I have a lot of women
who start out planning to do both or breastfeed for only a short time, so I
really want them to know formula is not harmless. I use a balance scale when
I teach about medications such as epidurals and anything else. I put little
blocks on one side for benefits and then on the other side for risks. It is
a good visual to say that there are times when benefits outweigh risks and
others when the opposite is true.
