I have searched the Lactnet archives with no success, and have my AAPL's
blessing to post regarding a new mother with Crohn's disease and slow onset
of milk supply.
First time mother is 28, taking 10 mg Prednisone, and 4 grams Pentasa (sp?)
antinflammatory per day. Also was slightly anemic during pregnancy and is
taking 150 mg iron/day.
Water broke & after unsuccessful induction was delivered C-section. Baby is
two weeks' early, birth weight of 7 lbs. 5 oz. Baby is sleepy, jaundiced
and not suckling at the breast. Mother pumping and feeding with SNS
(supplementing with formula, esp since baby has lost 11% weight).
As of day 4 (Sunday), mother's milk had not come in. Is seeing an IBCLC
tomorrow; and reports milk finally came in day 6 (Tuesday). My question
is: could her Crohn's disease have contributed to this, and what are the
ramifications (if any) wrt supply & bf with this disease?
Crohn's is not mentioned in R/A, Lauwers or BAB, except wrt lower incidence
in bf babies, or nursing a baby with it. Only mention in Lawrence is
regarding use of salazosulfapyridine to treat (p. 531) or nursing a baby
with Crohn's.
Appreciate any input on this.
TIA,
Anna Swisher
