<<In the nipple-shield discussion we need to remember that if
a mother must reach out to reach your help, you have a more
dedicated population than a helper assigned to all new
        mothers. >>

        Absolutely. Good point.

<< If mother must travel, fight her insurance
company, or pay her own cash, you have the cream of the
client crop. If she comes back for follow-ups, you are
staring at a future Leader or lactation consultant.
A determined mother is likely to make breastfeeding work no
matter what stands in her way.
As a Leader, I have been pushed to handle complex
situations because mothers here rarely feel able to travel
an hour and pay for expertise.....<snip>Pam Easterday LLLL (Their
"free phone call")>>

Join the club ::::grin:::: In my position as a WIC IBCLC, of
course, my clients don't have to pay, fight their insurance companies, or
even travel (when we're on the phone, which is usually the case). Many of
our clients don't have a car (or a 2nd family car; dad takes the one family
car to work each day), so we do our best to solve as much over the phone as
possible. Its not *ideal* - but as I said yesterday, I play the hand I've
been dealt.

In other words, as I often like to point out: we each adapt our LC
practice/methods to suit the individual needs of our particluar professional
settings, which vary widely. Hence our different experiences, and our
different "ways" in which we achieve success with our clients, etc. Sharing
those experiences helps us all, provided we all have an open mind and speak
gently - I learn from our hospital-nurse LC's on this list, and
hopefully.....I'm returning the favor by sharing whatever I'm learning as an
IBCLC for WIC in Miami, one of the largest WIC programs in the
country.......

"free phone call" :-)
