This is my first message after going no-mail for about two years. I
enjoy reading the digests, but I simply don't have time to look at them every
day.
I'd like to ask about Hashimoto's disease. (Before you tell me to look
in the archives, I've tried, but there's some problem, and I haven't yet
managed to get the postings I requested.)
I have been contacted by a mother who has just discovered she has
Hashimoto's disease. Her baby is nine months old.
Basically the disease causes hypothyroidism, which does not
contraindicate breastfeeding. But the parents' question is this: This disease
causes you to develop antibodies which attack your thyroid. Since your
antibodies are passed to your baby in your milk, isn't there a danger of
passing these dangerous antibodies, which might then attack the baby's
thyroid?
I find no mention of this disease in Lawrence, or in any list of
contraindications to breastfeeding. I know that mothers with this disease do
breastfeed while being treated for hypothyroidism. But this mother is very
anxious, so I really need an answer to this specific question.
Thanks,
