  During the procedure,
 sucrose can be added to the gauze. (We basically duplicated the procedure
 that Blass used in his study.) It takes at least 2 minutes for sucrose to
 be effective for pain control. It works by causing release of endogenous
 endorphins. >>

so if this works so well, how come we don't use this when sewing up
episiotomies, for example?
