Lactnuts,
I am happy to report that I RARELY need to go to the pedi w/ my kids - being
bf and all they are QUITE healthy. However, I always brought my own "bag of
tricks" becoz I didn't like sharing all those nasty germs. So I would bring
colors, markers, paper, books, puzzles, small toys etc in a grocery bag or
diaper bag. Beware, though, all the other kids will gravitate to you to be
read to and play w/ the toys too.
To make this more directly bf related - I bring books, magazines, and "happy
meal type" toys (received in Macdonald's and Burger King etc meals) and keep
them in a special drawer in my office and (instead of sharing) just give
them away to accompanying toddlers who need a diversion during a consult for
mom and new baby.
And just to share, I was consulted for a peds case for an 11 mo old who was
not taking much solids and due to the illness [pneumonia] she was not
nursing well. She was just miserable. I suggested several things that seemed
to work (saline in nose and suction prior to nursing, elicit MER], and I
brought her a book about animals and the sounds they make with bright
pictures and she just grabbed for it and perked up and quit whining. She
needed some entertainment!
I also donate books, childrens' magazines, and videos (that my kids are done
with) to the peds unit as well.
