Last spring Paula Meier came and spoke to our local affiliate NILCA (Northern
Illinois Lactation Consultant Association) and spoke of her current findings
on use of nipple shields and premies. She said often she will see these
babies get 3 times the amount of milk with the shield as without. Her thought
was that perhaps the reservoir or the teat fills with milk when the baby
initially starts to suck so that the milk is readily available which keeps
the baby a little more awake and interested. Anyone who has used a nipple
shield successfully will know exactly what I am describing.
