Hi Lactnuts -
Quick question from the border (with Mexico). I gave a class on newborns
yesterday to a group of 5 women and, of course, I always promote
breastfeeding. One woman, who was 6 months along with her 4th, quickly
told me she had always wanted to breastfeed but was afraid. Afraid of
what? I asked. She pulled a limp arm out of her lap (I hadn't noticed she
wasn't using it) and said she was afraid of dropping the baby.
Our clinic sees mostly indigent women, many immigrants, and this woman
looked particularly poor. When I mentioned the sling-type device she said
she had wanted one but couldn't afford it. I suddenly remembered a pattern
that used to circulate for sewing one, but have no idea where it might be
found. I think WIC stopped handing it out because they were worried about
liability. Does anybody know where I could find it? She said her
sister-in-law is a seamstress and could make it for her. If anybody can
help, please e-mail me privately! Thanks, libby
