I often see Gentian Violet mentioned in the same breath with herbs. I
may be wrong, but I do not think it is herbal. Perhaps someone can help
me out? This is part of what OSHA says about it:
SYNONYM(s): Hexamethyl-p-Rosaniline Chloride; Crystal Violet; Aniline
Violet;
Methylrosaniline Chloride; Basic Violet 3; C.I. 42555; Brilliant
Violet 5B; Methyl Violet
10BNS; Vianin; Viocid; Badil; Andergon; Axuris; Gentiaverm;
Meroxylan; Meroxyl;
Pyoktanin
Not that this changes anything regarding its efficacy, but it appears to
be laboratory created, or a chemical. I don't think this changes the
question of "prescribing" either, except that it is widely available
over-the-counter and the information about it can be offered to a mother
who then chooses her course of care. There is much more information on
gentian violet on medline than most herbs, as of yet.
Can anyone with pharmaceutical knowledge comment?
