When I meet with moms early postpartum or discussing frequency of feedings in
a breastfeeding class I approach it a couple ways.
I remind the mom/parents that while the baby was in the uterus they were
continuously fed and never had to experience hunger. I also ask the mom when
did she remember the baby being the most active in the uterus, which is
always in the evening, so this behavior will continue while the baby is in
the outside world for a few weeks, requiring more calories and feedings
during this time.
I show the parents the size of the infants stomach and again why they need
small frequent feedings.
Then I ask the parents if they snack, food or drinks, during the day between
their regular meals. I point out that we tend to find something to handle
our hunger and that is what the infant wants, sometimes it is a substantial
feeding, others are just snacks. I make the emphases that a baby does not
understand a schedule nor should they be forced into one.
Just my thoughts.
