AAAARRGH! This discussion of ethics makes me crazy! As health care
professionals we should first ensure that we provide the most accurate
up-to-date information to patients and we should work to maximize positive
health outcomes and to minimize harm to our patients. It is ludicrous to ask
if it is ethical to educate mothers about the hazards of formula feeding
when what we should be asking is, "Is it ethical to NOT educate them about
the risks and hazards of formula feeding". We would not dare to ask if it is
ethical to discuss the hazards of smoking, drinking and illegal drug use
during pregnancy, the hazards of not using car seats for infants nor the
hazards or the hazards of not immunizing a child. Why, then, should we
question the ethics of educating parents about risky feeding practices.
