Let me clear up this misunderstanding. According to my mother-in-law,
and her mother, both native spanish speakers who breastfed many
children, and according to my spanish-english dictionary, the correct
way to pronounce La Leche League is:
***Lah LEH-chay League***
Note the LEH sound is similar to pronouncing the "le" sound found in
"let-down," "lentil," and "leprechaun." Emphasis is put on the first
syllable of LEH-chay.
Also, the "chay" is pronounced using the long "a" sound. Similar to
"ape," "age" and "AIDS."
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding does not list the pronunciation
correctly. Sorry, amigos! Anyone up for *areola* ?
Heidi S. Roibal in Albuquerque, New Mexico (don't get me started on
pronounciating Albuquerque) whose voice mail emphasizes the "Le" for
Leche!
