Sometimes culture is a big immovable force out there, and one person cannot
fight discrimination alone. It takes a community of women to recognize that
not all of us have evolved to the point of being assertive. We have teen
moms, women who have been abused all their lives, and women who may not have
the mental or emotional capacity to stand up for themselves.
If we look at American history and discrimination, one person may have been
the catalyst but it took group effort to change the views of the society.
Why should we believe that the victim of discrimination is acting
inappropriately? Do we believe that robbery or rape victims are acting
inappropriately when they are victimized? Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
