I have keratoconus, a disorder that distorts normal corneal curvature into a
cone shape. I didn't notice any progression when I was pregnant with or
breastfeeding my first child. But toward the end of my second pregnancy, the
"cone" on my right eye got so steep that I couldn't be fitted with a contact
lens for that eye--a real inconvenience, since the accompanying distortions
in my vision couldn't be corrected with glasses. And sometimes I'd wake up in
the morning with a corneal abrasion just from the movement of my eyelid over
my eye during my sleep. For the 2+ years I was breastfeeding, I could
sometimes wear a lens and sometimes not. Months after my son weaned, though,
the cone was still so steep that sometimes my contact lens would just fall
out of my eye. I had a corneal transplant in my right eye when my son was 3.
Interestingly, the cone in my left eye did not seem to progress to the same
degree. And it hasn't progressed at all since weaning 13 years ago. Just one
person's experience.
