At one hospital (which shall remain nameless) the LC overheard a
comment about "the cherry syrup'. On further inquiry she learned
that on the night shift, nurses and aides were dipping pacifiers
into cherry syrup to keep the babies happy! And the pharmacy was
readily supplying it with no questions asked! The concern was
immediately discussed with the Director of the OB unit who was
appalled. A note was posted in the nursery by the LC (in hindsight,
the director should have signed it) stating that this practice was
inapropriate and was to stop. The bottle of cherry syrup was
discarded. The next time the LC came in, she found the note wadded
up in the wastebasket and a new botle of cherry syrup in a supply
drawer.
Needless to say, the entire night staff was spoken to by the
director, pharmacy was told they were no longer to supply the cherry
syrup, and apparantly the practice has now stopped!
Another case of whatever makes the nurse's work lighter regardless
of how it may impact the mom/baby.
