40 years ago, with my 4th child, I finally "made it with breastfeeding".
In February when he was 2 months old, his 7 year old brother brought home
the mumps to his 5 year old sister and 2 1/2 year old brother. Although I
never remember having had mumps myself, I must have had some immunity as
neither I nor the baby caught them.

By March, as the last mump went out the door, the first chickenpox came
in, and down the line it went. I had had chickenpox as a child, and noted
that even though the older children were covered with poxes, the baby got
only 7. I'm glad that if he had to have them, he was at least protected
enough to avoid a severe case.

However, he did get his own case at 7 years old, discovered on the day of
his First Communion! Later that afternoon! Even then, his case was not as
severe as that of his older siblings had been in 1960.

(In looking back, I'm extra thankful I finally "made it" with
breastfeeding him. I hate to think of what that winter of 1960 would have
been like without the immunities, the convenience, and the emotional
reward for me, as the "cabin fever" still sticks in my memory!)
