5 or 6 years ago when I was having my teeth cleaned and being harassed for
not flossing well enough, I asked my dentist for the research that said that
regular cleaning and flossing would make a difference for my teeth. He said
that there wasn't much research but that they were pretty sure it helped.
He also said that they hadn't done much research on why some people get
cavities and why others didn't.
I didn't follow up on this, since dental research is not a passion of mine,
but my dentist was a man who regularly read all the dental journals.
I do know that there is research on flouride and dental sealants. So I
wonder at times how thorough the research is on infant caries. Last year
our own state child and teen check up program changed the name on all our
posters from baby bottle mouth to early childhood caries. They did that
because they said there was no evidence that baby bottles were responsible
for infant caries, they also spoke to weaning to the cup at one year for
breastfed as well as bottlefed infants.
