In catching up on a few old lactnets, I found this, most likely out of its
original context:
>In the flip-book "Good Nutrition for Your Baby"... Dr. Jones states
breastmilk on demand, at
>least 5 feedings every 24 hours. (This is in the section on 4-6
>months-developmental stage of your baby - Looking forward to recommendations
>for 5-7 months it remains the same for breastfeedings, but does discuss the
>intro. of a cup at this next stage.)
It occurs to me that there's another way to determine what's "normal" for
certain ages. It's to look at how often babies nurse at that age *and then
note when weaning takes place*. I suspect that the baby who nurses 5 times
a day at 4-6 months is out the door by a year. We need to know not how
often *most* 5 month olds nurse, but how often those 5 month olds who are
happily nursing at age 2 or 3 nursed when they were 5 months old. To
recommend something different from what *those* children did is most likely
to put a professional seal on a pattern connected with early weaning.
