I think this is based on dated Freudian thinking, which in general stressed
individualtion over bonding. When folks bring it up to me -- as they often
do, including my own mother, who bf all of her kids when it wasn't
fashionable to do so at all but "of course" weaned us all between 4 and 7
months -- I ask them what they think about Freudian thinking on the
importance of the vaginal over the clitoral orgasm. That usually gets them
re-thinking at least a little.
