I have been following the posts on breast cancer and am responding in
regard to statistics. I have a 1992 Florida Vital Statistics and a 1997
Florida Vital Statistics. In 1992 a total of 2638 residents died of
breast cancer. The breakdown by age:
age #
15-24 0
25-44 208
45-54 297
55-64 484
65+ 1646
year 1997
15-24 0
25-34 34
35-44 152
45-54 370
55-64 429
65+ 1657
The biggest rise in 5 years for the death rate of breast cancer in
Florida is the age group 45-54. Frankly, I suspect the use of hormonal
birth control as a contributing factor. When they first came out, they
had high doses of estrogen. Hormonal birth control carries a risk of
breast cancer. This age group would be the ones who would be effected
first. But that's my guess. One would probably need to check other
states and look at greater time span. Valerie W. Mc clain, IBCLC
