In this case (inverted nipple) I probably would have gone to a nipple
shield . Not having been there, hard to say. But, I have found that
sometimes when an infant is really having trouble latching on at the
breast and mother is not willing to try SNS or finger feeding or cup
feeding the Haberman actually is better than a regular bottle because the
baby has to suck to get the milk and the flow is not as fast. It has
worked for me. Tried and true. The baby has then gone to breast after a
while. Remember never say never and try anything to save breastfeeding.
I am a hospital based LC for 25 years and when you have people staying
48 hours or less sometimes it is very difficult to get some babies on the
breast and feeding so the pediatrcian will let them go home. Once home
you can follow up and get them breastfeeding. We all do the best we can.
I've done many things I thought I'd never do to save breastfeeding.
I'll never forget the FTT infant in the PICU that I had the mom using a
starter SNS with the pacifier, the only thing we could get the baby to
suck on (long story) just to get food in him. You do what you have to.
The next step was an NG tube and we were able to avoid that all together.

Just my .02 worth.
