There is a weapon used against parents who refuse tests or procedures
for their children: the psych consult. This is used occasionally here
in NYC - first a hospital worker threatens the mom that if they don't
consent to x procedure on behalf of their child, they will be referred
for a psych consult. This produces the desired fear of losing one's
child, and many parents consent. If they hold their ground, in comes
the psychiatrist to grill the poor mother. I have unfortunately had to
counsel several mothers in this situation. If the mother is able to
stay calm and continues to assert her decision in a neutral voice, the
psychiatrist signs off. But it is still a traumatic thing to go through
because you disagree with medical advice.
