>Speaking of swarms, has anyone had luck with swarm traps and pheremone >lures? Jane, A good and simple reference to their use is as follows: Schmidt, J.O., S.C. Thoenes, & R. Hurley. 1989. Swarm traps. American Bee Journal. 129(7): 468-471. You might also be interested in my article in that same publication: 1992 Wenner, A.M. Swarm movement: A mystery explained. Am. Bee J. 132 (1):27-31. Placement of the swarm hives is also important. I recommend placing them a couple hundred meters upwind (for prevailing winds in your area) from your colonies -- head height or higher, with the entrance facing mostly downwind.
