In the UK clover used to be an important bee crop.  But that was before
my time, at least as a beekeeper.  I believe it's making a come back but
I'm told that one of the popular varieties being planted now, whilst
it's better for its primary purpose of improving grassland, is useless
for bees!  The flowers are deeper so honey bees can no longer reach the
nectar.
 
I don't know the name of the variety in question but Jeff Young may like
to check that he is using a "bee compatible" variety.
