Most commercial guys use syrup,  easier and right now cheaper.  Having used both quite a bit,  I see no differences in bee survivorship.  But handling.   Dadant and Kellys both sell pails.  Current price is 28-34 cents a lb.   Sugar here is right at 49 cents.  
  HFCS will crystilize if not stored correctly,  and once water is added will also ferment.  Many,  myself included use 1 cup of bleach for every 50 gallons in either sugar or HFCS to stop mold and fermentation. 

HFCS 55 is the typical,  while 42 is also avalible in some areas.  The values are the ratio of fructose/glucose.  One of my neighbors is feeding 42 right now and seems to be no problems.


Sugar is much easier to get and store in smaller quanties.
