David, thanks for this!  This is something that I'm seeing all over the
country.  By keeping one's expenses low, and income per hive high, a
small-scale operation can work!

In my own case, we are currently running about 700 hives, which is the main
source of income for myself and my two sons, all of us living independently.
 We are hardly getting rich (cash wise), but have found niches that make
our, as you say, "small scale commercial" operation financially viable.`
