Dear colleagues and friends,
It is a pleasure to offer you a complimentary copy of
EXPRESSION journal. Reading the language of art is a major challenge
of the new archeology and this issue 39 is displaying a variety of its
aspects. It opens on the function that the knowledge of the past has
in predicting the future. A debate makes the point on the origins of
religion, facing a major question concerning archeology, psychology
and the history of religion: why, when and how did religion originate?
Another paper contributes to the debate on the location of Mount
Sinai: how come that three monotheistic religions cannot locate the
mountain claimed to be the site of revelation of their faith? The
meaning of a twenty thousand years old engraving from the prehistoric
Altamira cave in Spain follows.
The main articles take us from the decoding of Eurasian Paleolithic
pictograms, to the puzzling anthropo-zoomorphic images of Kyrgyzstan,
to the reading of symbols produced by the native tribes of Colorado,
in North America, to the meaning of the Southern Africa native
paintings. No less interesting are the notes and news that follow,
dealing with actual problems and queries of current archeology,
anthropology and art history.
Your questions and your active participation in the debates are welcome
Cordial regards and best wishes
Alisa
