I started using top entrances here in New Hampshire, because (most winters) we get a lot of snow and the bottom entrances can get covered with ice and snow for days or even weeks.  A lot easier to add top entrances than having to shovel and hack open the bottom entrances.  On sunny days I find the bees using them when temps are only a degree or two above freezing.
