If you visit the Devon Apicultural Research Group website and click on the correct link to their drone laying queens you will see some interesting sections of the epithelium of spermathecae of drone laying queens. You need to enlarge to make the details visible.  Unfortunately the study wasn't controlled as nobody would give us healthy and productive queens to be sliced up!
