Probably all species of higher plants and animals are GMO. Recent work on cattle is interesting. Cattle have long been known to contain huge numbers of a repeat sequence in the DNA named Bova. This Bova makes up some 30% of the non coding DNA. It turns out it is a copy and paste transposon that came directly from snakes. Perhaps via a tick that fed on a snake and transferred some snake blood to a cow when it fed later on the cow. Elephants contain a similar transposon that came from lizards.

Nature has been in the GMO business since the dawn of life. She has moved all kinds of DNA across species, both coding and non coding. The non coding stuff is sometimes evolves to function in gene regulation in the new host.
