Hi all,
We have used Reflectix brand bubble wrap right over the frames for wintering. Sometimes two layers. It reflects back radiant heat and make a thermal barrier before the moist air from the bees hits the cold wood top. Probably a good idea to fold one corner back a bit to release excess moisture.
I always thought that the bees needed some moisture in the winter.
Sometimes
we have left it on all year with no apparent harm to the bees. Usually
there is some leakage to allow some air to escape, but it does float
over the top bars and makes for a better seal with our migratory
covers. I always thought that the clusters were looser in the hives
with the Reflectix.
It is available in 16 wide rolls at Lowes. We just cut off 20 inch lengths. It is also available in double thickness.
Allen has used his "pillows" for years evidently and will possibly comment.
