Can someone explain "entombed pollen"? It seems like a very bad trait from a survival or evolutionary standpoint for bees to be spending energy on packing in toxic pollen or even a benign pollen that they won't be using. It also seems that they would have worked out what not to introduce into the hive by now unless it's a substance that once was acceptable but is now transformed into something unacceptable by some genetic or chemical contamination.

Are they being fooled in the field, or is something changing once the pollen is packed and capped within the hive?
