When I built and ran a bit over 100 colonies in Farrar equipment, about 30
years ago, I used five mesh hardware cloth for excluders. Works fine.

For those who are interested, to build that equipment, I hauled the pine
logs from 400 miles away, had them custom milled to 6-5/8" planks, built
jigs for the boxes and a gang saw for the frame parts, then hand built all
the equipment. It was beautiful and worked OK. When I decided to expand
and go commercial, I sold it all, and settled on standard boxes and single
queen management.
