I just made 20 walks away splits with 1 frame of capped brood, 1 frame of
milk brood, a good shake of bees, 1 frame of honey, 2 frames of wax
foundation, syrup and pollen sub patties. I only want them to build up to 5
deep frames and 5 medium frames before winter so I think I can get it done
with being skimpy with the brood. I'm trying to not have to split my
splits, I have had to do that before. There are 4 to 6 honey supers on
every hive so it was heavy work and if I saw the queen I took her, put them
all in a queen bank just in case. The next day I went back and put in young
laying queens. I don't quite dare to take the queen and give them a new
queen all at once. Am I making my self extra work for nothing? I'm sure
plenty of people do it all at once, how often is the new queen rejected
when not giving them a queenless period?
Great weather here the past two days before that it was either fog and/or
rain or 100 F. I am heading out this week to visit family for a week and a
much needed break from lifting beehives. When I get home I will start
extracting.
