Bees infected by viruses have been shown to have poorer homing ability (Kralj, Li), so could increase the amount of drift.

Yes,  but unless I mis-read  that’s exactly the opposite that’s being reported.  The only thing that makes any sense here is that drifting "attempts" are a constant,  and only noticeable in hives that allow them in.

This falls contrary to what I have read and thought,  in that pretty much any drifter with cargo was accepted.
