The concept with drone trapping is to trap most of the mites and kill them. Very few, if any mites, would be left to breed. But their preferences wouldn't have changed, they still prefer drone comb. 



Are you sure of that?  Last I knew we didn't know about the selection criteria?  Knowing how the mites select drones over workers would seem to be a valuable key.  If we did we could in theory bait them.
