It would certainly have been helpful had they been more informative in
their M&M section--I'm surprised that PLOS accepted such a poor M&M.

Lesson learned:  PloS recruits it's Editors from suggestions made by anyone who manages to publish in PLOS.  From my interactions, the actual PLoS Editors (the one who has final decision capability - i.e. the paid employees of PLoS seem to be journalists, not scientists.

And PLoS likes to play the pay to comment game.  So, if they publish an article likely to generate a lot of sound bytes or debate, they let anyone comment regardless of background (for free), but they charge for any rebuttal article.  Hence they double their money.
